About Mt Ijen Tours

An independent comparison of the guided treks and multi-day trips that climb Kawah Ijen in East Java. We compare tour listings, official visitor information and recent traveller feedback. We do not operate or personally conduct these tours, hold no bookings and run no vehicles. The trips sit on the Mount Ijen tours comparison, and the sources behind every number are set out in our editorial methodology.

Why this site exists

Search for this volcano and the guides that come back miss the rules that actually shape your night. Many still skip the health certificate that has been mandatory for every hiker since January 2024. Some quote entrance fees from before the weekday and weekend split of 100,000 and 150,000 IDR. Most sell the blue fire as a certainty when the park itself closes the crater descent after seismic activity, and the flames some nights are flickers behind a wall of headlamps.

None of that is secret. It is in the park's own rules, in the operators' small print and in recent visitor reports. Putting it next to the price is the entire job of this site.

Where the facts come from

Tour prices, durations, ratings, review counts, inclusions and restrictions are read off each operator's own listing on the date shown on the page, in US dollars. Tour listings checked: August 2026.

Park fees, opening rules and the health-certificate requirement are checked against official park information and recent first-hand visitor reports, and dated where they appear. Traveller feedback reviewed: more than 5,600 verified reviews across the listings compared here.

Where an operator admits something inconvenient in its own words, such as the warning that the crater descent is only allowed when sulfur fumes permit and participants are fit for a 900-metre steep drop, we quote it rather than smooth it over. Review quotes carry the reviewer's name and travel month exactly as published. We do not write testimonials.

What we do not do

We do not inspect the mountain, ride the tours, meet the guides or audit safety records. Judging whether the gas over the crater is safe on a given night takes someone standing on the rim with a reading, and that is a job for the park rangers and the operator you book with.

We also do not take your booking. Every Check Availability button sends you to the platform the operator sells on, where the price, the terms and the cancellation window are theirs.

How the site pays for itself

Links to tours on this site are affiliate links. If you book through one, the platform pays us a commission and you pay the same price you would pay going there directly.

That arrangement pays for the research and nothing else. It does not decide which tours appear, what order they sit in, or what we say about them. The cheapest trek on the homepage earns us the least and it is the one we recommend for most travellers staying in Banyuwangi.

Corrections

Prices in Indonesia move, park rules change and the crater closes on short notice. If something here is out of date, write to us and tell us what you found and when you were there. We would rather fix a number than defend it.
